Vanhankaupunginlahti is a unique natural, cultural and recreational area located almost at the very heart of Helsinki. The reedy bay is an internationally notable bird wetland surrounded by diverse forests, some of which are retained in a semi-natural state. The area is home to several threatened and rare species of birds, insects, bats and polypores. For outdoor recreation, the area features a number of rest stops, bird watching towers and hides as well as an extensive network of routes consisting of trails and pedestrian and bicycle ways. Some of the routes are accessible.
